Live in California 74 is a live DVD of the first California Jam concert performance from Deep Purple released in 2005. It was recorded and aired live by ABC-TV on 6 April 1974 at the Ontario Motor Speedway near Los Angeles, California. This concert was one of the first ever music concerts issued on videotape and laser disc in 1981 under the title California Jam in Japan and the UK.

This concert represents Deep Purple right at the very end, with all the turmoil and drug problems going on. However, this is a very good concert and is far superior to the lackluster Last Concert In Japan album, which was recorded around the same time. Purple were on their A-game on this night and delivered a great show.

The 1972 concert was released by Audio Fidelity in 2004 as Live on the BBC with the addition of two studio tracks from the Mk I era: "Hush" & "River Deep, Mountain High". 1972 concert was remixed, remastered, and rereleased in 2012 by Purple Records as 4th disc on 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Box of Machine Head and on a vinyl double album
Sound is, not surprisingly, first rate, having been recorded by Martin Birch for release on the original "Last Concert in Japan" album and subsequent "This Time Around CD". The 5.1 mix sounds fabulous to my ears. Most people reading this will be aware of Tommy's condition at the time, and so know what to expect.
